Varied leisure activities
St.Gallen is part of a region where contrasts combine to create a decidedly extensive range of leisure activities. The shores of Lake Constance attract visitors with numerous outdoor swimming pools and a variety of water sports. The rural surroundings of St.Gallen provide wonderful hiking and cycling trails.
A city with history
The city itself is characterised by 1,400 years of history: Its name and origins go back to the wandering monk Gallus, who built a hermitage near today's cathedral in 612.
You will encounter the past at every turn during a stroll through the old town: Here the world-famous oriels, there the historically grown alleys with partly centuries-old houses and last but not least the imposing baroque cathedral, built from 1755 to 1767, the heart of the collegiate district, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
